Lobster Dress by Elsa Schiaparelli, 1937

Schiaparelli designed this silk organza dress in Paris in collaboration with Salvador Dali (they also collaborated on the "Tear Dress"). It's said that Dali was disappointed when Schiaparelli wouldn't let him spread mayonnaise on the finished piece. Wallis Simpson (The Duchess of Windsor) bought the dress from Schiaparelli before her marriage to the Duke of Windsor in 1937 and posed in it for Vogue.

Getting Started...

Henry Dreyfuss redesigned the historic 20th Century Limited in a streamlined, modern vocabulary for New York Central Railroad in 1938. I have borrowed the name of my favorite train for this site, which I would like to use basically as an inventory of things I love. I hope that this jumble of beautiful, innovative, or otherwise meaningful works will provide an interesting sketch of modern industrial/product design history for my friends, family, etc.
